An electric iron is a domestic appliance used to remove wrinkles from clothes by heat and pressure. It works on the principle of resistance heating. A nichrome heating element fixed inside the metal soleplate produces heat. A thermostat with a bimetallic strip controls temperature automatically. It has a handle, indicator lamp, and control knob. It generally operates on 230-volt AC supply.

An electric iron is a domestic electro-thermal appliance used to remove wrinkles from fabrics by applying controlled heat and pressure. It operates on the principle of electrical resistance heating.

The main component is the soleplate, usually made of aluminium or stainless steel, which distributes heat uniformly. Inside the soleplate is a nichrome heating element that converts electrical energy into heat. A thermostat with a bimetallic strip automatically regulates temperature by opening or closing the circuit at preset levels.

The iron includes a handle made of heat-resistant plastic for safe operation, a pilot lamp to indicate heating status, and a temperature control knob for fabric selection. Modern steam irons also contain a water tank, spray nozzle, and steam vents.

It typically operates at 230 V AC and ranges from 750 W to 2000 W in power rating.



Technical Description of Electric Iron (Prose Version)

An Electric Iron is an ironing machine which is heated by electricity and removes shrinkages from the clothes. Previously, people used the ironing machine which was heated by burning coal. It was made of iron and looked like a small iron box having a chamber to fill the coal in it. The chamber had an opening lid on it which after filling the coal could be locked.  It had a pointed nose and a flat and smooth bottom which after being heated was pressed on the shrunk cloth on a soft and flat surface. This process was able to remove the shrinkages from the cloth. Hard shrinks could be removed by wetting the cloth with a few drops of water. The machine was heated by burning the coal in it. But this machine had a disadvantage. It took a very long time to heat and emitted a lot of smoke before one could iron clothes by it. This machine is still in use but electric iron is much better than it. An electric iron is very much similar to it but the difference is that it has an electric element inside it to heat its bottom.  Some irons have a complete steel body while some irons have a plastic fiber body except the bottom which is made of steel having smooth surface. Nowadays, the bottom of the iron is coated with Teflon which makes it nonstick. Some irons come with a thermostat, temperature regulator and auto power cut system. 


The thermostat senses the temperature and cuts the power if it goes above the preset temperature and restart heating by resuming the power if it goes below the preset temperature. Some irons have an arrangement of filling water in it and they release steam from the bottom while ironing the clothes. Such an iron is known as steam iron.
