These shrines are simple buildings made of unpainted wood with steep roofs and lattice doors. Because they are left unpainted, the wood gradually turns gray under the influence of sun and rain, blending naturally with the surrounding landscape. According to Shintō belief, these shrines are the dwelling places of divine spirits called Kami. Many of these spirits are believed to be the souls of great warriors, rulers, or ancestors who lived long ago.
